The Bridge As Muse
“Ever since we moved up to Kingston and lived looking out on the Wurts Street Bridge, I have been inspired to photograph her great beauty - stalwart and impressive in all weather. Among the artists I’ve met here, many have had the same impulse. So, when we started the Time Capsule Project, I contacted a few of these friends about showing their art at the Time Capsule Event at the Hudson River Maritime Museum and also asked them to send their reflections on their connection with the bridge.
I’m excited to see the bridge in all her renovated glory this Spring in 2024. I look forward to watching as the seasons pass and she sweeps gracefully across the Rondout, the weather and the light ever shifting as the century proceeds .” Neville Bean

Wurts Street Bridge, North Tower - 2022
The Wurts Street Bridge was certainly one of the things that added to the charm and history that attracted my husband and me to move to Kingston from San Francisco. We bought an old house in the Rondout and a little boat that we love traversing the river in. Sailing under the bridge adds a wonderful graphic element for my photography.

Wurst Street Bridge - 2023
It is a way in and a way out of Kingston, physically and metaphysically. For me it welcomes me when I come to Kingston, and it says farewell when I leave.

Bridge Diptych - 2016
To me the Rondout Creek Bridge, also known as the Wurts Street bridge, the Old Bridge or the Kingston-Port Ewen Bridge symbolizes my neighborhood, Rondout and its history. Completed in 1921, it was an engineering marvel in its time. As a constant fixture in the landscape, I’ve seen it take on the patina of age and rust over the thirty years I’ve lived here. I am very happy the necessary repairs are now taking place to bring it back to its original glory. I am looking forward to its completion.

I love the Wurts Street Bridge with its graceful sweeping forms. It is a sculptural marvel. I love how it inhabits the landscape, part of the ever-shifting climate of the Rondout, grand and strong.

Pillars of the Community

The Wurts Street Bridge has always been a part of my life. Just like the church steeples, the towers are the pillars of our community.

Gateway to the Rondout - 2023
The Wurts Street Bridge was built at a time when these structures did more than providing access across rivers. They were also great symbolic gateways into communities. This one is a wonderful example of that and has always been inspiring for me.
